WHAT IS THE KENT TEST?
If your child is aiming for a grammar school in Kent, understanding the Kent Test is the first step. At Maidstone Learning Centre, we break down the process clearly so you know what to expect and how to prepare.
An Overview of the Kent Test
The Kent Test is the 11+ entrance exam used by grammar schools in the Kent County Council area. It is designed to assess a child’s academic ability and potential for selective education.
- Who takes it? Children in Year 6 who are applying to grammar schools in Kent.
- When is it taken? Usually in early September of Year 6.
- Why is it used? To select pupils performing in the top 25% of their cohort for grammar school entry.
- Administered by: GL Assessment
Key Benefits of the Kent Test System
- One test for all Kent grammar schools
- Designed to fairly assess a wide range of skills
- Includes both curriculum-based and reasoning assessments
What Does the Test Involve?
The Kent Test includes two multiple-choice papers and a writing task:
- Paper 1: English and Maths (1 hour)
- Paper 2: Reasoning (verbal, non-verbal, and spatial – 1 hour)
- Writing Task: Creative writing piece, marked only in certain situations (e.g. appeals)
Each paper begins with an unmarked practice section to help children familiarise themselves with the format.
Where Is the Kent Test Taken?
- Children in Kent primary schools usually take the test in their own school.
- Children outside Kent are invited to sit the test at a designated centre or grammar school.
