Supporting Students with Dyslexia: How MLC Makes a Difference
Every Learner Deserves to Feel Seen and Supported
For children with dyslexia, school can feel like an uphill battle, not because they aren’t intelligent or capable, but because they learn differently. At Maidstone Learning Centre, we’re proud to support students with dyslexia through personalised teaching, positive reinforcement, and practical tools that help them succeed.
We don’t focus on what’s “wrong” , we focus on what works.
Here’s how we support dyslexic learners every day, and how you can help at home too.
What Is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that affects reading, writing, and spelling. It has nothing to do with intelligence; many students with dyslexia are highly creative, resourceful thinkers.
What they struggle with is processing written language especially phonics, word recognition, and reading fluency. Left unsupported, this can affect their confidence and performance in school.
But with the right support, children with dyslexia can flourish.
Why Confidence Comes First
Many students with dyslexia have spent years feeling “behind,” “slow,” or “different.” Some stop putting their hand up in class. Others give up before they’ve even begun.
That’s why, before anything else, we focus on building confidence.
When students believe in themselves again, they become more open to learning strategies that work for them and more willing to try, fail, and try again.
MLC’s Approach to Dyslexia Support
We use evidence-based techniques tailored to each student’s unique needs. Our support is rooted in kindness, consistency, and high expectations.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
Multisensory Teaching: We combine sight, sound, movement, and touch to reinforce learning. This helps children absorb and recall new information more easily.
Dyslexia-Friendly Resources: We use overlays, large-print fonts, visual timetables, spelling scaffolds, and audio support to make reading and writing more accessible.
Small Group & 1-to-1 Sessions: Students work in calm, focused environments where they can ask questions, work at their own pace, and feel safe to get things wrong.
Celebrating Small Wins: Whether it’s spelling a tricky word or reading aloud with confidence, we praise every milestone. Progress may be slow but it’s steady.
Staff Who Understand: Our tutors are trained in recognising signs of dyslexia and adapting their approach. We work closely with families and, where appropriate, schools and educational psychologists.
What You Can Do at Home
Supporting your child outside the classroom is just as important. Here are a few ideas to try:
- Read aloud together- take turns or try audio books.
- Talk about what they understand, not just what they can read.
- Focus on effort- not speed or perfection.
- Play word games or spelling apps to make learning fun.
- Use praise that reinforces strategy: “You remembered to sound that out”
At MLC, Every Child Can Learn Just Not in the Same Way
Dyslexia doesn’t define a child and it certainly doesn’t limit their potential.
With patience, the right tools, and people who believe in them, dyslexic learners can become confident, curious, and capable students.
We’re here to walk that journey with them one step, one word, one success at a time.
A Parent’s Perspective
“Since coming to MLC, my son’s whole attitude has changed. He no longer dreads reading time. He actually volunteers to read now and he smiles while doing it.”
