Preparing for the Kent Test: What to Expect on Test Day
Confidence Comes From Clarity Let’s Demystify the Day
The Kent Test is a major milestone for many children aiming for grammar school and with it often comes nerves, questions, and uncertainty.
At Maidstone Learning Centre, we don’t just prepare children academically. We prepare them emotionally. Knowing what to expect on the day helps reduce anxiety and builds confidence not just for students, but for parents too.
Here’s what you need to know about Kent Test day, and how to help your child feel calm, ready, and in control.
What Does the Kent Test Include?
The Kent Test usually takes place in early September and includes:
- English & Maths Paper -multiple-choice, based on Key Stage 2 content
- Reasoning Paper – verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, and spatial reasoning
- Writing Task – a short written piece (used for headteacher reviews, not marked as part of the main score)
Each section is timed, with short breaks between papers.
What Happens on the Day?
Here’s a general outline of what your child can expect (times may vary slightly by school):
Arrival:
Children arrive at school as normal. They are usually taken to a quiet area or hall where the test is held.
Test Session 1:
- English & Maths (approx. 1 hour combined)
- Comfort break afterwards
Test Session 2:
- Reasoning paper (approx. 1 hour, including instructions)
Optional Writing Task:
Usually completed after the main test papers. This is not scored but may support appeal decisions.
Going Home:
The day finishes as usual;your child may feel tired and emotional (that’s normal!).
What Should They Bring?
- Two HB pencils
- A rubber
- A small snack and water bottle (check school guidelines)
- A positive attitude
No calculators, rulers, or smart watches
❌ No revision notes or textbooks
It’s best to keep things simple focus on comfort and readiness.
How to Help with Nerves
Even well-prepared children may feel nervous- and that’s okay. Here are a few tips:
- Practice calming techniques in the days leading up to the test (deep breathing, visualisation)
- Treat it like a normal school day– no fuss or “big day” language
- Get good sleep the night before – avoid cramming
- Eat a normal breakfast -nothing too heavy or too light
- Reassure, don’t pressure – remind them their effort is what matters
What We Tell MLC Students
- “You’ve already done the hard part, today is just showing what you know.”
- “Mistakes are okay. Keep going. One question doesn’t define you.”
- “You don’t have to get 100%. Just do your best.”
- “You are more than a test.”
Our mock test sessions, revision workshops, and 1:1 support all reinforce test-day strategies from time management to self-talk. We help students feel prepared not just on paper, but in mindset too.
Final Thought: Ready, Calm, and Confident
The Kent Test is important, but it’s not everything. When children walk into the room knowing what to expect and feeling that they are more than a score they’re already on the path to success.
At MLC, we’re here to guide, support, and cheer your child on through every step.
