Helping Your Child Tackle Exam Nerves
Feeling a bit nervous before an exam is completely normal, even healthy.
A little adrenaline can sharpen focus. But for some children, nerves can feel overwhelming and get in the way of showing what they truly know.
At Maidstone Learning Centre, we believe emotional readiness is just as important as academic preparation.
Here are some simple ways you can help your child manage exam nerves and even turn them into a strength.
- Normalise the Feeling
First, let your child know it’s normal to feel nervous before an exam.
You might say:
- “It’s okay to feel a little nervous, it means you care.”
- “Everyone feels that way sometimes, even adults!”
Taking the mystery out of nerves makes them feel smaller and less scary.
- Practise Relaxation Techniques
Simple strategies can help settle the mind and body, such as:
- Deep breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 6)
- Positive self-talk (“I’ve worked hard and I’m ready.”)
- Quick muscle relaxation (tighten and release fists, shoulders, etc.)
Teaching these techniques early means your child can use them automatically during exams.
- Focus on Effort, Not Outcome
Instead of focusing on scores, highlight:
- The effort your child is putting in
- The skills they’re building
- Their perseverance and growth
Reassuring them that their value doesn’t depend on a test result relieves a lot of hidden pressure.
- Practise Under Realistic Conditions
Mock tests at home, set up in timed, quiet environments, can:
- Build familiarity
- Reduce “fear of the unknown”
- Boost time management skills
At MLC, we introduce mock tests gently, focusing on building confidence first, not just chasing scores.
- Look After Wellbeing in the Lead-Up
In the days before an exam, make sure your child is:
- Sleeping properly
- Eating nutritious meals
- Taking time to relax and have fun
A calm, rested mind works much better under pressure.
Confidence Is a Skill, Too
Tackling exam nerves isn’t just about staying calm; it’s about building resilience, positivity, and inner belief.
At Maidstone Learning Centre, we help students feel confident, capable, and ready for every challenge.
