Why 11 Plus Mock Exams Will Change the Way Your Child Handles the Kent Test Clock
Happy resumption to our dedicated families and students!
Is your child prepared for the pace of the Kent Test morning?
The 11 Plus exam is a sprint that requires both academic precision and strategic timing. At Maidstone
Learning Centre, we provide Eleven Plus preparation Maidstone families rely on to bridge the gap between knowledge and exam-day performance.
What is the Kent Test structure?
The Kent Test consists of two multiple-choice papers and a creative writing task. Each section is strictly timed to assess how quickly a child can process complex information.
Paper 1: English and Maths
This paper lasts approximately 60 minutes and is split into two main sections.
• English Section: Includes a 5-minute practice and a 25-minute test covering reading comprehension and literacy skills.
• Maths Section: Includes a 5-minute practice and a 25-minute test focusing on the Year 5 and 6 curriculum.
Paper 2: Reasoning
This paper also lasts approximately 60 minutes and tests abstract thinking.
• Verbal Reasoning: Children have approximately 20 minutes to solve problems involving words and patterns.
• Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning: This is divided into short, 4–5 minute sections that test shape manipulation and spatial awareness.
The Writing Task
The final 40 minutes are dedicated to a creative writing exercise. This includes 10 minutes of planning and 30 minutes of writing.
Why are 11 plus mock exams Kent sessions essential?
Mock exams provide a realistic simulation of the high-pressure environment your child will face.

How do mocks improve timing?
Practising under timed conditions teaches children when to move on from a difficult question. Many students lose marks by spending too long on a single problem, leaving no time for easier questions later in the paper.
What is the benefit of the GL Assessment format?
The Kent Test uses a specific multiple-choice format where answers are marked on a separate sheet.
Mock exams help children master the physical skill of shading bubbles correctly and staying in sync with the question booklet.
Can mock exams reduce test-day anxiety?
Familiarity breeds confidence!
How does the environment impact performance?
Sitting in a room with other students and a formal invigilator removes the “fear of the unknown.” By the time the real test arrives, the process feels like a routine rather than a threat.
Why is stamina important for the 11 Plus?
The test morning lasts over two hours. Mocks build the mental endurance required to maintain focus from the first English question to the final spatial reasoning puzzle.

How does Maidstone Learning Centre support your child?

What happens during our mock exam reviews?
The exam is only half of the learning process. Our specialists provide detailed reviews to identify specific gaps in knowledge or strategy.
• Diagnostic Feedback: We pinpoint whether errors are due to a lack of understanding or a lack of time.
• Strategy Adjustments: We teach children how to use the process of elimination for multiple-choice questions.
• Personalized Support: Each student receives guidance tailored to their unique learning profile.
Do you need specialized 1-on-1 support?
Our teachers are available to provide targeted interventions for students who find certain sections of the reasoning paper challenging.

How to manage the after-school rush?
Our supervised After School Hub is designed to assist with homework and evening routines. This service allows children to complete their 11 Plus practice in a focused environment, leaving your evenings free for family time.
Frequently asked questions about 11 Plus preparation
